Youth Camp

TANOSHII Fun Camp is a Nikkei heritage day camp for 2nd through 5th graders in partnership with the Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute every July. Please read more about the program here and on our newly launched website tanoshiifuncamp.org!

2010 Scholarship applications now available!
The deadline to apply for South Bay JACL Chapter Scholarships is in April 2010, but National scholarship deadlines are earlier. For more information, please see our Scholarship Information page.

Holiday Dinner and Installation of Officers
Please join us for the South Bay JACL's annual Holiday Dinner on Friday, December 4th, from 6 to 9pm. It will be in a private room at the Marie Callender's in Torrance (21211 Hawthorne Blvd). 

The celebration will include the Holiday Giving Project (see below) and installation of the 2010 boardmembers. The slate for the chapter's 2010 Board includes:

  • President: Kent Kawai
  • Vice President: Amy Phillips Kushigemachi
  • VP of Programs: Ray Shibata
  • Secretary: Lily Nakatani
  • Treasurer: Jeff Sakurai
  • At-Large: Richard Ames, Ike Hatchimonji, Colette Isawa, Leilani Kimmel-Dagostino, Ernie Tsujimoto, and Jeannie Tsujimoto

Holiday Giving Project
During the holidays each year, the South Bay JACL has an opportunity to serve our community by “adopting” needy families who are receiving services from the Little Tokyo Service Center. If you'd like to know more about the program or participate, please read about the Holiday Giving Project and the families we sponsored previously here.

The South Bay chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) is a civic organization dedicated to serving the Japanese American community and preserving the cultural heritage of Japanese Americans especially in the South Bay area of Los Angeles County. The South Bay JACL was established in 1973 and is one of 35 chapters of JACL Pacific Southwest District. National JACL is the nation's largest membership-based Asian American civic organization. National JACL has more than 20,000 members in 112 chapters across the country, with staffed offices in Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Chicago, and Seattle.

South Bay JACL members come from all over the South Bay area including Torrance, Long Beach, San Pedro, Palos Verdes, Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Lawndale, Hawthorne, Gardena, Harbor City, Lomita, Wilmington, Carson and Compton. Meetings are typically held at the Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute on the third Thursday of each month at 7 p.m., except July, August and December.
